This school was opened in 1920, in a house in
Southlands Road purchased and adapted by the city. There were 64 boys
enrolled in March 1921. An assembly hall was added in 1925 and a
headmaster's house built before 1932. There were 425 attending in March
1933. Extensions to provide accommodation for 120 boys were added in
1938. There were 478 boys attending in 1945.

Comments:
I started at Nunthorpe in
1959. My base classroom was in the new block.
It had 5 classrooms, the Art
room and the Physics labs upstairs. My form
master was Mungo Park. I met him 12 years after I left. I bought him a
pint at the Fox in Dringhouses. The master in
the class nearest the entrance was Greasy Graham. He was a great
linguist but not so good as a teacher. Leaving
in 1963 wasn't a complete break as my lecturer
at York Tech was Vincent Cable's dad. (Michael
